The transition to college is a major life event for a large number of young adults. Research on adjustment to college in personality psychology has largely employed self-reports to examine which trait domains relate to academic performance. A recent study appearing in the Journal of Personality Assessment expanded on previous studies by examining how self, peer, and parent ratings of personality relate to academic, social, and emotional adjustment after the end of freshman year. It was determined that all three sources of personality ratings were important to the prediction of adjustment. Specifically, conscientiousness (as rated by all three sources) and openness (as rated by parents and peers) predicted academic adjustment; self-ratings of neuroticism and peer ratings of extraversion predicted social adjustment; and self- and parent-ratings of neuroticism predicted personal emotional adjustment.
